Science/Writing
Our lesson today was about how to start an object moving with another moving object - a collision. The children thought of many every day instances where this occurs: kicking a soccer ball, blowing a feather, hitting a baseball, 2 cars colliding.
We spent about 15 minutes in the gym using balls to start other balls moving, using slow and fast rolls and watching the resultant collisions.
The children drew and recorded their observations in their science notebooks.
Literacy
We practiced singing and reading our new "Mud" song by Rick Charette. The children illustrated their song with crayons and water color paints.
Reader's Workshop
The children were introduced to new "just right" books today and had the experience of trying a "cold read" - without an introduction to see what they could do just using what they knew about letters/sounds and picture clues. Many were surprised that they could read a new book without any teacher help!
We talked about how text is organized - left to right and top to bottom
Story
"Max's Chocolate Chicken" by Rosemary Wells
Math
*children completed number sentence dice graphs from Friday (home in blue folders)
*children used beads to create several addition number sentences for the same number (i.e. for 7: 3+4. 2+5)
they recorded their number sentences in their math journals.
Special
Music with Mrs. Keating - Oliver performed the solo and Jasper played the gong
