Today's Activities
Special visit
Mrs. Benoit, our school counselor visited out class this morning to share her first lesson about feelings, cooperation, determination. She read, "The Little Engine That Could", to help children explain how the children in the story were feeling as the events unfolded (sad, mad, tired, discouraged) and how even someone little (like the little blue engine) can make a difference with a positive attitude - "I think I can, I think I can!"....
Mrs. Benoit will join us each Friday for a 15 lesson.
Safety Drill - Lockdown
The children practiced their first Lockdown today - one of the safety drills we practice here at VES. When we have a "lockdown", Mrs. Noble makes an announcement over the PA that we are having a lockdown. There is no alarm, just those words. The children practiced sitting in our "safe spot" in our classroom which is away from the windows and our locked door. This drill is intended to keep everyone safe in the event of trouble in the building. The kids did a fabulous job!
Writer's Workshop
The children were introduced to their writing folders and their idea cards today. They have 2 pockets labeled "finished" and "not finished". They learned where to put their work when they are done. They also learned about how their idea cards can help them when they get stuck - they were excited to have their cards read to them!
Math
We read a story, "Mouse Count", where the children helped to count the mice going in and out of the snake's jar.
We completed our daily math routines: counting how many days we have come to school, counting up to the date on the calendar, singing our day of the week song, and reading about the weather (Willy the Weather Bear).
Story
We read, "If You Take a Mouse to School" and "How Will You Get to School?", a silly story about some fanciful ways a girl imagines she can travel to school (i.e. on the backs of a "zillion butterflies")
Centers
*iPads - the children were introduced to an app that helps with letter identification and penmanship, "Letter School".
*Playdough - choice
*pattern blocks and puzzle designs
Assembly
We had our first school wide assembly this afternoon. We celebrated/sang Happy Birthday to the students who have September birthdays. The children saw a short skit about using good manners in the cafeteria (please and thank you). We sang our school song, "Everybody Knows", all together!
